So while I was wallowing in the darkest depths of PPD, I spent much of my time curled up fetal, feeding my baby and reading. I read many, many books and I came away with a favourite. It so transported and cheered me and offered me an oasis in the darkness, that I did something unprecedented. As self absorbed in misery and anti-social as I was feeling, I could not resist dropping a line to the author:
Auspicious occasion: the first time I have ever contacted an author. Loved your book-it was refreshingly adorable, hilarious, real and even dare I say... wholesome? Or is wholesome a dirty word? I am wending my way through random pockets of free floating postpartum depression and your book was a wonderful little island of real- totally relateable-escapism (you may have invented a new genre) in the midst of it all….
Attachments, the debut novel of Rainbow Rowell, is the sweet, hilarious, poignant and thoroughly engaging story of Beth and Jennifer, clever and funny friends, having an ongoing conversation via email, and Lincoln, the kind, shy and nerdy (but in a cute way) IT guy, who becomes immersed in their life sagas (unbeknownst to them) when he can’t bring himself to issue the standard “no personal messages on company email” warning.
The messages between Beth and Jennifer reminded me of conversations I might have with my sister, like this one, and were often laugh out loud funny. One can totally relate to Lincoln’s inability to break the habit of reading their witty emails, as you join him in falling in love with their characters, and anxiously flip the pages to see what happens next in the drama of their personal lives. At the same time, Lincoln is starting to wake up to the fact that he is stuck in his past and there is a coming of age element to his story, which will have you rooting for his adorable character more with each chapter whizzing by.
This is one of those books that you can’t put down but you wish you could, because you don’t want it to end. Light but soulful, this is the perfect book to take to the beach (or curl up in a fetal position on your bed with). Either way.
When I contacted Rainbow, she was sweet and gracious enough to respond. (She is just as genuine, warm and witty as the characters in her book, and was kind enough to check in with me later to see how I was doing with my depression battle-isn’t that lovely?) She was also kind enough to get her publisher to agree to let me give away a copy of her book to one of my readers, and I dare say that she may even be persuaded to send a signed book plate to the lucky winner. (You want this, trust me, she is going to be a phenomenon).
I’ve been recommending this book to everyone I know, so I’m genuinely excited to be able to share it with one of you.

Sounds like a great book. A recent unexpected find of mine was healer by Carol Casella. A women finds herself having to resurrect her carrer as a physician when her husband loses his backing as a venure capitalist. Wonderful story about medicene and marriages. I'm glad to see you are doing better with the PPD. I too have struggled with it.
I want a new book. I've been reading sexy/bloody novels this summer about Scotland in the 1200s. Awesome!
I don't love reading so I love recommendations and even if I don't win I will read this book- because of your description... I actually have just started the Harry Potter books for the first timE this summer- to wake up my brain. I'm on #3 so I'm enjoying her imagination
this book sounds hysterical and perfect summer reading (much more perfect than the student journals I've been reading this week about Adler's "How to Mark a Book" and Golding's "Thinking as a Hobby." I've recently read two or three other novels, though, that are email-type exchange format and find them funnier and more engaging than I had originally thought. Of course, I don't know why that should surprise me. Some of my bestest friends I met through email, back in the days of email "lists". 15 years later, some of us are still very close friends. We share humor, love, joy, sadness, and anger together. Just like a circle of real life friends, only better in some ways. Some of those people were the most supportive of me when I was in treatment and they were the first people I told when I was diagnosed. Amazing the power of the written word to create relationahips.
Anyway, I'm glad you found a fun read and I"m glad you made a new friend in the author and I wish her all the best. I'm going to forward your post to my reading friends.

I've been catching up on my National Geographic magazines while nursing Elliot and have been quite enjoying that. I'm not allowing myself to read books until I finish the magazines, since they've been sitting next to my bed in a stack for a long time (a few date back to 2005...). Before Elliot was born, I read "At home" by Bill Bryson--he discusses the history of various rooms of the house and, as Bill Bryson always does, goes off on tangents. Interesting read. "Attachments" sounds like an interesting book, too (especially since I suspect my work computer usage started being monitored recently). I'm glad it helped you out when you were down.

My favorite book of the summer is 'Bossy Pants' by Tina Fey. Laugh out loud funny! I usually do books on tape (downloaded from the library) but I just made a trip to the library today and will have to put this book on my list. Angela C.
